FEATURING ROBERT JENKINS

Words from my Dad, Robert about his Dad, John

For Father’s Day 2026, I felt called to invite my Dad, Robert  to share a few reflections about his Dad, John, who he lost when he was just 25.

My Dad’s responses have helped me to connect with my Grandpa John in the present. I invite you to use these prompts in conversations with your loved ones today, too.

A favorite memory with your Dad

My favorite memories of Dad were the summers we spent at Side Lake when he taught us to water ski, drive the boats and jeep, shoot the 22 rifle, and explore every dirt road and pot hole in a 15 mile radius.

Those were always fun adventures and he seemed to enjoy them as much as I/we did. ☺️

A song that always reminds you of your Dad

Sometime in the fall of 1964 I first heard YOU REALLY GOT ME by the Kinks, which Rolling Stone magazine lists as its #4 Greatest Guitar Song of All Time.

I was blown away by the power and fury of the song. It wasn’t a cute love song by the Beatles, or a blues-cover by the Rolling Stones, it was fast and furious full steam ahead ROCK N ROLL that literally shook the speakers I first heard it on.

The connection to DAD: he had just completed building those two very large speakers into the cabinets in the den and that was the first song I heard on the new speakers. 🔊🔊

I don’t think Dad was there to hear the song or witness his new speakers trying to shake out of the cabinets, but I felt like I’d been struck by lighting: such a raw, powerful sound.

So thank you, Dad, for building those great speakers!!! They surely enhanced the music considerably. 🙏🎶

Greatest gift your Dad gave to you

His common sense and political philosophy. Thank you, Dad!!

What do you want to celebrate about your Dad’s legacy?

For me, Dad's greatest legacy was putting his family first. Unlike many of his generation, he wasn't at the country club playing golf and drinking with “friends,” he was home teaching us how to play baseball, badminton, and ice hockey. And when he wasn't doing that, he was building an amazing train set, or a mechanical baseball game, teaching us how to cut the grass. 🥺 or giving us our US Army enlisted man haircuts. 😥 But then he would barbecue some amazing chicken or steak. 🥩 Dad was a Family Man first and foremost and that greatly impacted me. 🥰
